Computer says 'yes' IT skills are now vital for job success
Everyday IT skills can help you earn more money, keep your job or get a new one according to new research among both bosses and staff*. Yet many people still need to bring their computer knowledge up to scratch.
In a learndirect survey, six-in-ten companies say they would increase a salary offer to attract someone who has the ability to use applications such as e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and the Internet. When recruiting, more than nine in ten (92%) businesses ask about applicants' ability to use a computer, with 73% of companies saying these skills are a must for all employees. Two-thirds (64%) aren't fully confident in their ability to use IT, with 29% admitting they've had to redo tasks, cover up mistakes or deal with an angry boss because they lacked the right skills.
The learndirect centre in Highway to Opportunities, Union Street is offering a range of IT qualifications to help Oldham locals improve their computer skills and their job prospects. Commenting on the findings, Louise Day at Highway to Opportunities said: "The research shows how important IT has become in the modern workplace. A large majority of jobs now need staff who know how to use computers, so it's crucial people aren't left behind as IT becomes central to working life. "We can offer courses and qualifications from beginners who want to learn a bit for home use all the way to level 2 IT qualifications covering topics such as Internet, e-mail, word processing and spreadsheets."
Outside the workplace, 36% of Britons say being computer literate saves them money on bills and shopping and almost a fifth (19%) say it leads to better relationships with friends and family. Five per cent also admit a lack of IT skills has meant they've had to ask a child for help to do something with a computer.
